The sound of a silent illness

Turn your volume up to hear my TMJ noises.

First you can hear my left TMJ clicking, which is a symptom I developed quite recently (along with pain)*. Then, the crepitus and minor clicks produced by my right TMJ - my everyday soundtrack...
Unfortunately I haven't been able to record a major click yet, one of those that can be heard several meters/feet apart.

*I wonder if removing the right articular eminence caused an overall jaw imbalance that is affecting my left side now...

  1. Hello,

I've been googling around for TMJ surgeries to see what scarring looked like and what were the type TMJ issues people have been suffering and I've landed onto your blog. I've been living with what I think is TMJD (TMJ Disorder) for about the last two decades. I can't really pinpoint when it started, but what I do know is now I'm deathly afraid of opening my mouth really wide (to bite into a sandwich, a hot dog, or a burger). I'm afraid that it'll lock up and create this horrendous cracking/pop noise that really hurts. It's as if I no longer have the disc to soften the friction between the mandible and condyle, cheek bones. It just "grinds!"

Does this sound similar to what you were suffering from before you opted for surgery?

I told my dentist about this issue several times but he doesn't have a solution. He thought about providing me with a mouthpiece that I was to wear when I sleep, but I've read on its lack of efficacy. I also visited a chiropractor who attempted to make adjustments to re-positioning my jaw. Months of chiropractic adjustments did not help me either.

I'm not sure what kind of doctor or specialist I need to see about my TMJ issue. ='(
